I have chosen to focus on producing a
psychological thriller for the film because this type of genre focuses on
mainly mystery and thriller. However this can incorporate other elements from
the mystery and thriller genre and can occasionally overlap with the horror
genre. Although, I have chosen to focus more to the mystery and thriller rather
than horror.
Themes
Many psychological thrillers have emerged
over the past years, in all different types of media, including films, TV dramas, literature, etc. Despite the different forms of representation in psychological
thrillers, general trends have appeared throughout the narratives and some of
these include these particular conventions:
- · Reality
- · Perception
- · Mind
- · Existence/purpose
- · Identity
- · Death etc.
These different types of sub-genres help develop
psychological thrillers to define characters personalities (whether they are
good or bad).
I have chosen this genre specifically because
psychological thrillers build suspense with the audience when done correctly. This
genre can be very realistic and believable which could help the audience sympathies
with the characters and imagine what it would be like in their shoes. With my
trailer I will focus on the mind and emotional blackmail within this genre.
Examples of Psychological Thrillers
Here are some of the main psychological thrillers that have inspired my idea for my own film.
- Red Eye
- Gone
- Se7en
- Phonebooth
- Possession
- Black Swan
- Dark/shadowy lighting (to give eerie atmosphere)
- Isolated location
- Female victim
- Disruption of normality
- Sub plot of male/female relationship
- Defeat of monster or villain
