Feature Page 1.

To get an idea of the common conventions of a feature article I will be analyzing Kerrang! Magazine who is featuring Blink 182, the band. The target audience for this magazine would be around the ages of 14-20 years of age. The music feature is aimed at white men around the social classes of C1-E. The genre of the magazine is Punk and because of the nature of modern music targeting teenagers the colours model around them.

Layout and Colour-
In terms of layout and colour, Kerrang! Has used simple unisex colours to appeal to all audiences especially their target audience. Black and Red/Orange appeal to all audiences interested in the Punk genre. Against the white/light blue background the black and orange background stand out against the harsh colours, which makes the feature look Punk and appeal to their target audience. The layout of the feature is very conventional; it follows a trend that most magazines follow. The text has been laid out at the bottom of the magazine in columns, following common conventions of typical magazines. The title takes up the majority of the feature and the image of a band member takes up about ¼ of the feature. There is not much text on the feature and the text that is on the feature is very small. However the key points have been put into a different font and colour to stand out the audience. Also the band name that is being featured is in the top left corner to attract fans and appeal to their target audience. It is in a spiky bubble at the top and draws your attention when you look at the feature because of the shape and colour. Stanley Hall (1904) quotes that "Adolescence is inherently a time of a storm & stress when 'all' young people goes through some degree of emotional and behavioural upheaval, before establishing a more stable equilibrium at adulthood" and this also applies to the  colours of the magazine which are quite dark and depressing which stereotypically appeals to the target audience. Which suggests that Stanley Hall could be correct in some ways.

Imagery-
In terms of imagery on the right side of the feature there is a long shot of a band member and a dinosaur in the corner. This could connote that he is young and is trying to appeal to a younger audience. Also, from editing, there is a claw mark in feature to appeal to the target audience and fit into the Punk genre. Another thing is that the title looks as if it was draw quickly on by a teenager with biro. In addition this could also show that the target audience is being represented through the imagery. The band member from ‘Blink – 182’ is wearing all black which does fit into the Punk genre. The image has a whole page to itself to draw the reader/audience to process the image and read the feature. However because of this imagery, it stereotypically doesn’t really appeal to a female audience because of the colours and images.

Typography-
In terms of typography this feature page is quite limited in how much text is written on the page as the feature is dominated by the main image. The columns are the same width and length, however they are not very neat and does not really look very professional. Although the main title is very interesting and appeals to the target audience which are mainly teenagers. The typography of the title looks like it was sketched and looks like something created in a college lesson and that’s why I think it appeals to the target audience.

Text-
In terms of text there is not much of it. It is very small and not very readable which will not appeal to audiences. However the bold text of the left column is very good which would appeal to the target audience because it is very clear and allows audience to clearly read it.

  1. A good analysis of a double page spread with reference to relevant theorists and target audiences preferences.
