Feature Page 2.

Feature Page 2-

To get an idea of the common conventions of a feature article I will be analyzing this magazine . The target audience for this magazine would be around the ages of 14-20 years of age. The music feature is aimed at all ethnicities around the social classes of C1-E. The genre of the magazine is Punk/Rap and because of the nature of modern music targeting teenagers the colours model around them. In this case the colours are quite dull and grey. This magazine feature page is representing a youth film that these songs were involved in.

Layout-
In terms of layout the text which is aligned in columns is very neatly designed and it is very clear considering the size of the font.  The images are layed out quite erratically with could be another symbol of youths. Dick Hebdige quotes "youth as fun, youth as trouble maker" which could support the specific layout of the feature. The images take up approximately 1/3 of the feature article and does not really follow the common conventions that you would see on a feature page. Although it does appeal to its target audience who is around the ages of 14-20 years of age. The title is not very large and does not stand out very clearly which could prevent some audiences from reading it. The text located in the top left is in red and stands out very clearly against the white background which is very good. Overall the layout of this feature is not very good and does not follow the clear conventions like a magazine such as Kerrang! or Q magazine.

Imagery-
In terms of imagery there are many images involved with this feature. Many of them show gang members who are of different ethnicities. Hebdige can be applied here again with his quote "youth as trouble", because stereotypically audiences assume gang members are youths who are trouble makers, also Medhurst (1998) can also be applied here with his quote "they are awful because they are not like us", with this audiences stereotype these images and assume they are awful because they are gang members, however this might not be the case. And Medhurst believes they are awful because they are not white, middle class straight males. Also there are not many females in these images and this could show that the male audience is more dominant in this magazine and might only appeal to a male audience the majority of the time.

Colour-
In terms of colour the feature is very dull and boring to look at. Dull depressing colours might appeal to the target audience and the magazine is targeted at youths. The colours are not very unisex and this might cause a lack of female interest in the magazine feature and even the magazine. Like the previous analysis the feature page Stanley Hall (1904) can be applied here again with his quotes,” Adolescence is inherently a time of a storm & stress when 'all' young people goes through some degree of emotional and behavioural upheaval, before establishing a more stable equilibrium at adulthood", and this also applies to the  colours of the magazine which are quite dark and depressing which stereotypically appeals to the target audience.

Typography-
In terms of typography there is not very much text involved on the feature and seems quite limited with the information. The columns are very neat and tidy which could corrupt my theory that the images are some what erratic. However the whole feature in my opinion is not very good and with my magazine I will follow conventions and not forget some of them like this magazine has.

Text -
Text in this feature is very good and is the only real convention that is making it look presentable. It is quite small but it is readable unlike the previous feature page. Considering this, I think it does appeal to its target audience because the text is very clear and well presented.

  1. A good analysis of a double page spread featuring discussion of theorists and discussion of youth target audience.
