Analysis of a Music Magazine 2.

In terms of target audience, the primary target audience of this magazine is working class (social classes C1-E), this magazine is targeting white men aged around 16-25 who are into rock music. All of the conventions on the cover are targeted towards representing this group and their needs.

I will begin my analysis with the imagery. This cover doesn’t break any conventions because it uses close up image of a star vehicle, in this case one of the band members of 'Guns 'n' Roses', to represent the target audience and their needs. In addition, this image connotes that the magazine will be representing young, white men, around the ages of 16-25 years of age who are into Rock music.  McQuail 1987 states, "Different needs are associated with individual personalities". Within the media this is very true in my opinion because everyone has their own opinion, especially when it comes to the appearance and contents of music magazines. McQuail is basically stating that what the audiences want, should be involved in the media somehow. Whether it is in music magazines or on television.

Masthead- In terms of this, the masthead takes up about a quarter of the magazine cover. this could be argued that the magazine is not following the common conventions as the masthead should take up around 1/8th of the cover page. However many music magazines break this convention like this one. The masthead is very clear and appeals to its target audience.

Layout- In terms of layout this magazines layout is usually shown in the same and follows the common conventions of a regular music magazine. There are around 4 to 5 different text sizes and 4 to 5 main colours to keep the magazine looking simple or else it will clash with other colour which would not appeal to their target audience. This could appeal to the target audience because of the way it has been laid out and the celebrity advertising the magazine on the cover. All the text stands out against the bold colours, which gives it that extra something which appeals to their target audience.

Imagery - In terms of imagery the conventions have not been broken, they have used a white, male to represent their target audience for the cover. The cover has used a band member to represent the rock genre and focus around the star vehicles to interset audiences. The image is a medium shot as it is not focused on the stars face. Stuart Hall (1981) is a theorist that can be applied here, "youth doesn't change" this means that youth is predictable, has been and always will be the same.

Colour- In terms of colour the colours a quite dark and dull which helps represent the Rock genre and also these dull colours also appeal to a teenage audience. Stuart Hall (1981) again can be applied here, "youth doesn't change" the colours are dull and dark which could appeal to the younger audience.

Typography- In terms of this, there are four main colours and around four to five different types of fonts on the cover of the magazine to represent the different types of texts being highlighted and shown. Also the masthead is very large and take up around 1/8 of the cover, which helps represent that the masthead is the main text on the music magazine cover. In addition the 'Gun 'N' Roses' located in the centre of the cover is the second main text as it represents that the feature page is about this band.

  1. A good piece of analysis work here Amber which shows your acknowledgement of pre-existing products and the expectations of the target audience.
